Idle EC2 cost savings: find underused instances and verify the bill drop
Idle EC2 is one of the most common AWS cost leaks. Instances keep billing after traffic drops, a spike ends, or a project pauses. This guide covers how to find candidates safely and prove savings after you act.
Why idle EC2 burns budget
On-demand and reserved capacity still accrue hourly charges when utilization is near zero. Teams often leave “temporary” instances running for weeks. Dashboards show the spend; ownership and verification are what turn that into real savings.
What “idle” usually means
Practical idle signals include sustained low CPU, little network traffic, and no meaningful application load. Always confirm with the service owner before stop or terminate—some batch or standby systems look idle until they are needed.
- Low CPU over multiple days
- Near-zero network or disk activity
- Non-production tags with no recent deploys
- Orphaned instances from old experiments
How SpendPilot helps
SpendPilot scans for idle and underused EC2 candidates, creates owner-assigned actions, and verifies savings against Cost Explorer after you fix the resource in AWS. Access stays read-only—we never auto-delete.
Verify savings the right way
Stopping or rightsizing is only half the job. Refresh Cost Explorer (or SpendPilot spend sync) and confirm month-to-date EC2 spend dropped for that account/region before calling the savings verified.
Checklist
- List EC2 instances with low utilization over 7–14 days
- Exclude known standby / DR / batch workloads with owners
- Assign team, project, and environment on each finding
- Approve → stop or rightsize in AWS
- Sync spend and verify Cost Explorer drop
FAQ
- How do I find idle EC2 for cost savings?
- Look for sustained low CPU and traffic, then confirm with the owner. SpendPilot surfaces candidates as actions so they do not stay buried in CloudWatch alerts.
- Will SpendPilot terminate my EC2 instances?
- No. SpendPilot uses read-only access. Your team approves and applies changes in AWS; we track status and verify bill impact.
- Is idle EC2 the same as rightsizing?
- Related but different. Idle often means stop or remove; rightsizing means a smaller instance family/size when some load remains.
